Great excitement last night! At about 4am, the people sleeping in the front of the house are woken by the sound of engines and flashing lights outside. Those of us that are awoken rush outside to find two fire engines and about 6 firemen all putting out a fire that has broken out in the house next door. Flames can be seen leaping from the front room and there is smoke everywhere.
Our last full day in Cornwall! We head out for a valedictory walk across Perranporth beach and revisit the caves. We trudge across the sands to the Watering Hole and have hot chocolate topped with mountains of cream.
The house next door is a charred wreck. It used to be a hotel but a planning application had just been made to turn it into flats - so the fire looks a bit suspicious. Those who slept through all the excitement can't quite believe the mess.
Duncan and Suzi head off to Truro to meet up with Duncan's parents, who have come down to see tonight's show, and take Helen P and David with them so that David can catch his train. The rest of us mooch about the farmhouse - reading, knitting and hoovering up the leftover food for lunch.
Helen P returns in Duncan's car and we gather up our stuff to head back down to Truro. Sarah and Jan head off early as they need to get their hair done, and Ben and the two Helens follow in Duncan's car.
Or that's the plan...... Somehow the key breaks in the lock and the car is inaccessible. As well as leaving the passengers stranded in Perranporth, everybody's change of clothes is in the boot. The three take a taxi to Truro and confess all to Duncan........
The GLOC warm up is now attracting quite a crowd from the Duchy Chorus - they seem to have got over their inhibitions. It feels peculiar to be performing the last night when we've only done two performances, but tonight is the gala night. The audience are dressed up and it feels very special. It's another big success and another standing ovation.
It's over all too quickly. There are brief speeches at the end and presentations made to the soloists. It's a bit surprising that more of the people behind the scenes aren't thanked - like Lynn with the costumes and Sheila with the props - so maybe we'll say it here! And then there's the get out..... This is just like we would do at GLOC, except that it's a considerably bigger undertaking here with such an enormous set. The whole of the central square is taken up with lorries and vans to take the stuff away and everyone is press-ganged into helping.
In the meantime, Ben has driven Duncan back to Perranporth with Suzi's car key to see if they can get into the car. Much to everyone's relief, they are successful and both drive back to Truro.
We're not quite sure where to go afterwards. There are no plans for a big after-show party, so we don't get to say a proper goodbye to everyone. We're back in the Kasbar again, but it's quite noisy and crowded. Someone invites us back to their house for a get-together but we decide that, on balance, we'd rather get back to Perranporth and amuse ourselves.
So we go back to the farmhouse and hold a post-mortem over apple crumble.........
