Grosvenor Light Opera Company

Gilbert and Sullivan - never knowingly undersung!

Join GLOC !

Who are we/What do we do?

Each year we stage a full production, usually in June. Over the past few years the venue for this has been The London Oratory Arts Centre, Fulham, a modern, purpose built theatre that seats 300 people. We almost invariably have vacancies for all voices for the chorus and for those wishing to take principal roles. We always need tenors and altos.

Membership is drawn from a broad section of age and employment groups most of who work in the City or West End. Each year a significant number of new members join the society - these are often young people working in London for the first time. The society offers friendship, the opportunity to develop a wide repertoire of Gilbert and Sullivan material through the concerts and the opportunity to take part in a fully costumed show.

The Company meets and rehearses between September and June inclusive, and splits the year into three terms, Autumn (Sept to Dec), Spring (Jan to Easter) and Summer (Easter to June). We meet at St Gabriel's Halls, Glasgow Terrace, Churchill Gardens, Pimlico, SW1V 3AA, from 6.30 - 9.30pm every Wednesday during term time. We welcome singers of all voices to join us. If you would like further details please email the chairman, Sarah Olney

Membership

How much does it cost?

Membership of GLOC is based on a membership fee, there are no specific show fees. There are three ways of paying the membership subscription:

  • One Annual Fee of £180
  • Monthly by Standing Order: £19/month between Sept and June
  • Termly: £65/term
This is made payable to GLOC and arrangements have been made for fees to be collected as GiftAid, since we are a registered charity. Our Treasurer, will give you the appropriate form to sign. If you are on a UB40, special rates can be discussed with the Treasurer. The fees cover the cost of a Musical Director and accompanist and the hire of rehearsal rooms. The company also appoints a production director.

Do I need to audition?

Yes! You have to demonstrate that you can sing in tune! You will have an audition with the Musical Director and Committee present and you need to sing any song for which you can provide the music – style of music is not important, and the audition is fairly informal.

Tickets Selling

Ticket sales are vital for the production’s success, as it is a very expensive exercise to put on a high quality show with full orchestra and great costumes, so we expect all members to sell at least 10 tickets, and to be involved in distribution of leaflets advertising the show.
