Gilbert and Sullivan - never knowingly undersung!

Auditions for The Gondoliers

Dear GLOC-er /Potential GLOC-er!

Below are some details of the audition process for The Gondoliers.

The show will be Gilbert and Sullivan's The Gondoliers, one of their very best, full of wonderful music and great fun! We will be performing it at the London Oratory School from the 8th - 11th June, rehearsing in Pimlico on Wednesdays from February and 4 Sundays in April, May and June (not bank holiday ones).

We will be holding an open meeting on Wednesday 26th January. This is a chance to register for an audition if you would like to go for a principal part, find out more about the show, and for newcomers to be introduced to GLOC and to learn some of the music. It is from 6.30-9.30 at St Gabriel's Halls, Churchill Gardens off Lupus Street, Pimlico. For people wishing to be in the chorus, there will not be a formal audition, but do please come along to the meeting to register and meet us. There will be a £10 audition fee payable in cash on the day of the auditions, which will then be taken off the cost of subs payable for doing the show, details of which can be found on the website.

Auditions will be held on Saturday 29th January from 10-5pm so please keep this date available if you would like to audition. As you will obviously not have much time between the two dates to learn for your audition, I attach here details of the audition pieces. Some of the smaller parts will be cast from people auditioning for the larger ones, so if it is not listed as having audition pieces, it is not being separately auditioned for. Our production is going to be putting a new twist to the show, being a show within a show. This means that each character in the show will also have a double - the actor who is playing that part. For example, Gianetta will also be Janet. Details of these can be found of the first page of the attached libretto, which is the adapted libretto we are doing. The music will still be G and S's music and most of the original dialogue will also be there, with our production giving it a fresh approach, with lots of scope for backstage capers!

If you would like to audition, please look at the attached list, which will tell you the song or part of it you need to learn and the dialogue from this libretto. Please note that some parts have a bit of dialogue from the character role and a bit from the "actor" role, which you will be able to tell from the context. If you do not have the score, you can get hold of a pdf of the music online here and if you are buying it, we will be using the Chappell/International Music Publication version. If you have a problem with either the date of the open meeting or audition, please let me know well in advance and I can see whether it is possible to work around it.

You do not need to let me know in advance of the meeting which part you are going for, but please be ready to let me know at the meeting. I will be able to let you know the time of your auditon on the Saturday the day after the meeting.

I hope very much that you will join us for this production and do get in touch if you have any queries.

Best wishes
Alice Wilkinson
