The Mikado

Grosvenor Light Opera performed The Mikado;  or, The Town of Titipu the in the summer of 2014 as Islington Arts and Media School and the 21st International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in Harrogate.

With a modern day interpretation which incorporated the overcrowded Tokyo Metro, a Karaoke bar and a very violent use of fans, this was a fun and laugh-filled show, which probably broke the record for the number of on-stage selfies*!

Cox and Box

with music by Arthur Sullivan and lyrics by F. C. Burnand

based on J. Maddison Morton's farce of "Box and Cox"

Fast-paced, funny and frivolous, this under-performed gem of the Victorian stage represented Arthur Sullivan’s first foray into composing comic opera, before his celebrated partnership with W. S. Gilbert.

For G&S afficionados, this was a rare opportunity to see the full original version of Cox and Box, reinstating the Gambling Song and verses and dialogue which were cut from the more familiar abridged "Savoy edition" that entered the repertoire of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company.

An unscrupulous landlord, Sergeant Bouncer, has hit on a capital plan for maximising his income:  he rents out his spare room both to Mr. Cox, who works all day for a hatter and doesn’t come home till night, and to Mr. Box, who works all night at a newspaper printer’s and doesn’t come home till morning.  So Sergeant Bouncer gets double rent for his room, and neither of his tenants is any the wiser!  What could possibly go wrong?!
